New Color Photography

“Often people ask what I‘m photographing, which is a hard question to answer. And the best what I‘ve come up with is I just say: Life today.”

- William Eggleston

At a glance

As part of my Bachelor's specialization module “Media Design Photography”, I created the e-book “Color”, in which selected photographs in the style of New Color Photography offer a new perspective on the city of Nuremberg, Germany and its details.

My role

  • Photography & research: Analysis of William Eggleston's style and its influence on my photography

  • Concept & design: Development of an eBook and selection of the photographs

  • Post-processing: Post-processing the photos and defining the visual style

Technologies & methods

Digital photography, post-processing to determine style, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign

Result
“Color” features a fascinating collection of photographs that capture everyday life in Nuremberg in vibrant color and detail. The e-book conveys a fresh, unbiased perspective and captures the beauty of the city and its inhabitants in everyday life.

Inspiration

Inspired by the era of New Color Photography, I tried to capture colorful moments in a city that, due to its difficult past, often shows itself in a gloomy light. A challenge that I wanted to take on as part of my bachelor's degree specialization module “Media Design Photo”. This resulted in the e-book “Color”, in which selected photographs in the style of New Color Photography find their place. In this photo book, I show Nuremberg, Germany from my perspective.

New Color Phototgraphy

For me, the fascination that emanates from New Color Photography is strongly linked to the work of William Eggleston.
So for me, this eBook began primarily with analysis and research: how does Eggleston photograph a petrol station, an empty Coke bottle or a tricycle - everyday objects - in such a way that the images appear interesting? How do I take advantage of the technical changes of recent decades?
I no longer have to decide which film to put in the camera and I have the opportunity to determine the look of the picture afterwards according to my own ideas.

Conclusion

My photographic journey meant getting back into areas where many people meet during a pandemic. It meant dealing with frustration when I wasn't quick enough to capture a moment on camera. At the same time, I was given the opportunity to see the beauty of the everyday more intensely through my lens.
During my photo walks, it was always important to me to be unbiased. So I kept an open eye for my surroundings and took the opportunity to capture them realistically with my camera.
