At a glance

Nexus is a light and sound installation that was realized as part of the Klanglicht Festival 2024 in Graz, Austria. The installation combined a complex LED setup with an immersive story told through light and sound.

My role

  • Concept & narrative: Development of the content idea to depict the conflict between good and evil

  • Technical implementation: Co-designing the light show and adapting it to the spatial conditions

  • Construction: Design and construction of the aluminum scaffolding for mounting the LED rods

Technologies & methods
Lighting design, Adobe After Effects, sound synchronization, room installation, interdisciplinary collaboration

Result

Nexus created an impressive, immersive experience for visitors, combining artistic vision with technical precision.

About the project

Nexus is an immersive light and sound installation that was realized as part of the Klanglicht Festival 2024. The project was created as part of one of my courses at FH JOANNEUM and was realized in the Antoniuskirche in Graz. In small groups, light/sound shows on the overarching theme of “SPECTRUM” were developed. At the center of the installation was an elaborately constructed setup of 56 LED rods, which made an impressive light show possible. The visual staging was accompanied by a specially developed sound composition that was played through strategically placed loudspeakers in the room.

Concept & Narrative

Nexus invites the audience to experience the eternal confrontation between good and evil. The story begins with the dominance of evil, but as the play progresses, good rises up and an intense conflict unfolds. In an apparent moment of triumph for evil, the two forces finally unite and reveal their interdependence - both are essential components of a greater whole and give each other meaning. The following illustration illustrates the concept graphically.

Implementation

The project was realized in six teams, with each team creating its own 2-3 minute light show. The individual sequences were then combined to create a coherent overall work. The light show was developed using Adobe After Effects and successively adapted to the conditions of the room on site. A sound designer created a tailor-made sound piece to which the light show was adapted.

The concept developed by my team for the LED construction on site was chosen as the basis for the entire sound & light project after a vote. For this purpose, a complex framework of aluminum strips was designed, in the construction of which I was significantly involved. The LED rods were attached to this.
